How do you know if you don't look?

When symptoms are complex, persistent, or not improving the way they should, one question matters more than most: what is actually happening in the brain? Symptoms alone don’t always tell the full story. For the right person, looking directly at how the brain is functioning can be a powerful step toward more precise answers and more targeted support.

Why functional brain imaging matters

In many cases, people are treated on the basis of symptoms alone. But symptoms don’t always tell the full story. Two people may both struggle with anxiety, low mood, poor focus, or memory concerns, yet the underlying brain patterns driving those symptoms can be very different. When we can see more clearly what may be happening in the brain, there is far greater opportunity to personalise care and avoid unnecessary guesswork.

A brain SPECT scan is a functional imaging modality. Rather than showing structure alone, it measures blood flow and metabolic activity across brain regions, revealing patterns of under- or over-activity that symptoms cannot. It adds a layer of insight in cases where a deeper understanding may meaningfully change the direction of care.

This service is offered through an international pathway, not in South Africa itself. NeuroVita coordinates the scan through reputable international imaging partners for global clients and for South Africans travelling to the UK, Europe, the US, or parts of Asia.

What’s involved

Coordination

NeuroVita helps coordinate your scan through a reputable international imaging partner. We handle the logistics so you can focus on the assessment itself.

The scan

A SPECT scan measures blood flow and metabolic activity across brain regions. It shows patterns of under- or over-activity that symptoms alone cannot reveal.

Clinical interpretation

Your scan is interpreted by a registered Nuclear Physician experienced in functional brain imaging. Patterns are identified and contextualised against your history and symptoms.

A personalised plan

NeuroVita uses the scan findings to shape a highly personalised brain health plan. The aim is not only to identify patterns, but to use that information to guide more precise next steps.

Research-backed insight for more precise care

Brain SPECT work is backed by thousands of scientific citations and has shown that imaging can meaningfully influence clinical decision-making in complex cases. Amen Clinics has reported that, in its data:

79%

SPECT imaging changed the diagnosis and/or treatment plan

22%

SPECT revealed unexpected brain injury or toxicity

60%

SPECT identified new medication or supplement targets

A study from Creighton University also reported that using SPECT on admission cut hospital stays for bipolar teenagers by more than half.

By actually looking at the brain, and then using those insights to guide highly personalised support, there is a much greater opportunity to improve outcomes.

What you gain

You leave with a clearer picture of how your brain may be functioning beneath the surface, and with more targeted, personalised recommendations to act on. In complex cases where symptoms might otherwise be misread or oversimplified, a scan offers greater clarity. Most of all, you leave with more confidence that your care plan is being shaped by the brain itself, not guesswork alone.

A scan is only as good as what follows it

At NeuroVita, we do not stop at helping you access imaging. We use the findings to build a more precise, more personalised support plan grounded in brain health, mental wellbeing, cognitive performance and long-term prevention. That is where the real value lies.
